Outdoor Classroom

The Ward Elementary School Outdoor Classroom was designed by Principal Ed Ward (former principal) and Dr. Lloyd E. Story, Biology Professor at Maysville Community College, with the help of Mike Quillen, also of Maysville Community College. Assistance also came from Fleming County Schools teachers, several state and federal agencies, and the generous help of many local volunteers. Many donated time and materials in aid of the building of the covered-deck structure and tool/instrument shed, the forming and covering of the woods paths, and in training of aide-guides for students. The land itself-adjacent to the school-was leased for a nominal fee from a local landowner.
The main idea was to build an outdoor classroom while preserving the natural environment of the area-only native plants would be introduced or added. The planners "walked the woods" to catalog the flora and fauna, and to plan the winding paths that radiate from the deck teaching area. The deck itself has a large table for demonstrations, and is wired with electrical service for lighting and power. Seats are built into the surrounding framework, and a sink dumps back into the shallow water pond over which the deck is built.

The pond drains naturally and is fed by the runoff of a wetland are upgrade. It was dug by local U.S. Forestry agents, and has been overtaken by plants and animals exhibiting an excellent example of "succession."
There are over two-hundred species of plants and animals present in the area. Many of the plants and trees along the path are tagged for identification quizzes. The area has hosted various classes. For example, one class enacted The Three Billy Goats Gruff in the wooded area, using the three bridges over the stream as props.

The classroom is used year-round by teachers to illustrate firsthand natural phenomena. Changes in plants from season to season are observed. Life cycles, the diversity and balance of species, and many other topics become real for the children as they immerse themselves in guided direct experiences.
